Each of North Carolina’s 100 counties has a county board of elections with five members who are registered voters in that county. The State Board of Elections appoints four members – two Democrats and two Republicans – to each county board of elections.

This year, election officials faced monumental challenges in the month leading up to the election after Hurricane Helene devastated western North Carolina. Those difficulties were largely surmounted, which Democratic board member Siobhan O’Duffy Millen commended as part of a “well-run election.”

Each county in North Carolina has a Board of Elections. It is a five-person bipartisan board appointed every two years by the State Board of Elections. County Board members take an oath and begin their two-year terms on the Tuesday following the third Monday in July in odd-numbered years.
