History. Fraser Health was created in December 2001 as part of a province-wide restructuring of health authorities by the then-new BC Liberal government of Premier Gordon Campbell. It is the merger of three former health regions: Simon Fraser Health Region (SFHR), South Fraser Health Region, and the Fraser Valley Health Region (FVHR).
The Department of Health and Welfare was formally established on October 1, 1946, with George Pearson as the inaugural minister. [ 6 ] During the first term of the Gordon Campbell government, a separate Ministry of Health Planning was created (led by Sindi Hawkins ) but that ministry was later merged back into the main ministry. [ 7 ]
Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) is a publicly funded health service provider in the province of British Columbia.PHSA is unique in Canada as the only health authority having a province-wide mandate for specialized health services, although within British Columbia the First Nations Health Authority is also non-regional and highly dispersed.
Surrey Memorial Hospital began operations in early 1959 and officially opened on 31 January. It is one of twelve hospitals under the jurisdiction of the Fraser Health Authority, which provides health services to more than 1.8 million people. Surrey Memorial is the second-largest hospital in British Columbia and has the busiest emergency department.
Royal Columbian Hospital. Royal Columbian Hospital (RCH) is among the oldest hospitals in British Columbia and one of the busiest in the Fraser Health Authority. It is located in New Westminster overlooking the Fraser River and is the only hospital in the Lower Mainland that is immediately adjacent to a Skytrain station (Sapperton).
