Architect. LindenGroup Architects. Argosy's Empress Casino (also known as Empress Casino Joliet) was a Riverboat casino and hotel located in Joliet, Illinois. Built in the 1990s by a group of investors headed by T.J. Lambrecht, Empress Casino become one of the first riverboat casinos in Illinois. It was destroyed by a fire on March 20, 2009.
Empress Casino Joliet Corporation v. Giannoulias, 231 Ill.2d 62, 896 N.E.2d 277 (2008), is a case from Supreme Court of Illinois in which four casinos challenged a tax imposed by Public Act 94-804. The Act was challenged on the grounds that it was an unconstitutional taking.
In 1999, the corporation acquired Empress Casinos, including both the Hammond property and another Empress Casino in Joliet, Illinois. After selling off the Joliet property in 2001, the Hammond property was rebranded as Horseshoe Casino Hammond on May 4, 2001.
The following year it opened a second casino Horseshoe Casino Tunica. In 1999 the company grew more by acquiring Empress Casinos and its two casinos. In 2001, the Empress Casino in Joliet was sold to Argosy Gaming Company and the Empress Casino in Hammond was rebranded to the Horseshoe Casino Hammond which opened under the new name on May 4, 2001.
