The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), through its seven regional divisions, manages 262 protected areas statewide. This agency was formerly known as the California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG).
The CDFW had been getting reports about what appeared to be three wolves. In August 2023, CDFW identified a new wolf pack in Tulare County, approximately 200 miles (321 km) south of the nearest known wolf pack. The pack consists of at least one breeding pair and four pups - two males and two females.
