Kuppalli Venkatappa Puttappa (29 December 1904 – 11 November 1994), popularly known by his pen name Kuvempu // ⓘ, was an Indian poet, playwright, novelist and critic. He is widely regarded as the greatest Kannada poet of the 20th century.

Kanuru Heggaditi or Kanooru Heggadithi (meaning: Proprietress of Kanuru) is a Kannada language novel written by author and poet, Kuvempu, in 1936. Based on the novel, a Kannada movie Kanooru Heggadithi directed by Girish Karnad, was released in 1999.
Kuvempu is a case in point who was convinced by his professor (of British origin) that he should write in his mother tongue. Kuvempu went on to become a "Rashtrakavi" (national poet).
