On 1 November 1888 the regiment ceded eight batteries and one train company to help form the 23rd Field Artillery Regiment. On 1 October 1891 the regiment reorganized two of its batteries as mountain batteries, which the regiment transferred on 31 December 1893 to the 5th Field Artillery Regiment and received two field batteries in return.
