The college was established in 1864, [1] as the Christ Church Boys' English Elementary School, in the garden of Lady Sophie McCarthy, by the church missionaries of the Kurunegala Diocese. The first Sri Lankan Scout troop was established at the school by a British Highways Engineer, Francis George Stevens, in 1912. [1][2]

The school was founded on 3 August 1942 by Tuan Burhanuddin Jayah. [1] [2] The original 4.5 ha (11 acres) school site was donated by Vithanage Tergin Nanayakkara, the local member for Matale. The first buildings were funded by a donation from a local Muslim philanthropist, Cassim Had Sar. [3]
