SuperPlus Food Stores. SuperPlus Food Stores was an American discount supermarket chain that operated in the Chicago area during the 1980s until it was sold, piecemeal, by its parent company, The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (A&P). [1] [2]
Purity Supreme was led for most of its existence by Leo Kahn who started Purity Sav-Mor Markets with some of its first stores in Billerica, Chelmsford and Bedford. In 1968, Kahn bought out the Supreme Market chain of Boston and thus Purity Supreme was born.
In 1950 the company made $179 million in total sales, an average of $488,637 per store. [3] In 1955 the Cincinnati based Albers Super Markets and the Indianapolis based Stop and Shop Companies were acquired by National Food Products and put under the Colonial Stores label. [1] [4] In the 1970s most of the stores were moved to the Big Star label.
