It was a private university founded by the Methodist Church of Indonesia (GMI) in accordance with the decision of the annual conference which took place in Medan on 31 January 1965. Preparation of UMI officially began on August 1, 1965. PTMI changed its name to UMI on Date 4 September 1969 in accordance with Law No. 22 of 1961 on Higher Education.
