Cardiff Metropolitan University ( Welsh: Prifysgol Metropolitan Caerdydd ), formerly the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC; Welsh: Athrofa Prifysgol Cymru, Caerdydd, APCC) and commonly referred to as Cardiff Met, is a university located in the city of Cardiff. The University of Wales ( Welsh: Prifysgol Cymru) is a confederal university based in Cardiff, Wales. Founded by royal charter in 1893 as a federal university with three constituent colleges – Aberystwyth, Bangor and Cardiff – the university was the first university established in Wales, one of the four countries in the United Kingdom.
Ryan Jones studied at UWIC, now Cardiff Metropolitan University, gaining a BSc (Hons) from 1999 to 2002. He played over a hundred games for UWIC RFC and captained the firsts in his final year. Jones said of the university: "I was a student at Cardiff Met's Cyncoed Campus for three years.

Wales Institute for Research in Art and Design (WIRAD) is a collaborative venture founded by the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC) and University of Wales, Newport (UWN). WIRAD seeks to support research excellence in Art & Design within Wales by sharing expertise across institutions.
