The Performing and Visual Arts magnet program at Miami Northwestern was started in 1975 by Marcy Sarmiento. In 1982, the program was the starting point for PAVAC, the influential dual-enrollment joint program with Miami-Dade Community College, [9] [10] which later became the New World School of the Arts.

Christopher Columbus High School is a private Catholic college-preparatory high school conducted by the Marist Brothers in the Westchester area of Miami-Dade County, Florida. [2] It was established in 1958 and transferred to the Marist Brothers in 1959. It has over 100 teachers, administrators, faculty, staff, and an enrollment of 1,700 students.
MLEC has 26 different strands spread among five magnet academies. Although the school is not recognized as a magnet program by Miami-Dade County Public Schools, as it does not receive specialized magnet funding, the school retains the ability to require students to complete an application form, and may admit students from areas outside of traditional school boundaries.
Due to the reputation of the school, Miami-Dade County Public Schools began "franchising" MAST. In 2010, MAST Medical @ Homestead was established. [ 10 ] In 2011, José Martí Middle School introduced its magnet program with a high school expansion in 2011, before completely re-branding itself as José Martí MAST 6-12 Academy in 2013. [ 11 ]
