Based on my own experience, I reckon that the file compression ratio of a standard .dmg would be approximately 0.365%. That means that if you have a file which is reported by your file system to be about 500MB, for instance, and you turn it into a dmg image, your file system should report it to have a file size of approximately 182.5MB.
