Athy workhouse was established on the site under the Irish Poor Laws; it opened on 9 January 1844, just before the Great Famine. [4] The Sisters of Mercy arrived as nursing sisters in 1873. In 1898, it became a County Home. 268 residents were transferred to the new St. Vincent's Hospital on 3 April 1969. [5] [6]
The hospital, which was designed by Francis Johnston, opened as the Carlow District Lunatic Asylum in 1832. [1] It became Carlow Mental Hospital in 1925 and, having been re-named St. Dympna's Hospital, after St. Dympna, the patron saint of mental illness, in 1958, it was taken over by the Department of Health in 1971.
