Since July 2017 the Naval Service has participated in the European External Action Service mission which focuses a number of EU navies on humanitarian and training roles in the Mediterranean. This mission entitled "EU Navfor Med" is the first time Ireland has taken part in a multi-role and multi-national naval operation.

USS Sentry (MCM-3), an Avenger-class mine countermeasures ship, is the second U.S. Navy ship of that name. Sentry was laid down on 8 October 1984 by Peterson Builders in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin; launched on 20 September 1986 and commissioned on 2 September 1989.
During the Second World War, Navy officer service numbers were extended to 350,000; these numbers were simply issued by entry date into the Navy officer corps without regard to membership in the Regular Navy or United States Navy Reserve. In 1945, with the service number cap now reached, the Navy extended officer service numbers again to 600,000.
