Politically, the district leans slightly Democratic, due to the presence of Lane and Benton counties, home to over half the district's population. Lincoln County also tilts Democratic. Contrariwise, Douglas County is heavily Republican, as are to a lesser extent Coos and Curry. The district has been represented by Democrat Val Hoyle since 2023.
The district has been represented in the United States House of Representatives by Republican Zach Nunn since 2023. With a Cook Partisan Voting Index rating of R+3, it is the equal least Republican leaning district (along with the 1st) of Iowa’s four congressional districts, a state currently represented in congress only by Republicans. On May 4, 1935, voters in Common School District 29 approved creation of the Aldine Independent School District (AISD) by a 128 to 28 margin. [18] With the S.M.N. Marrs School filled to capacity, AISD voters approved 57-14 a $25,000 bond for construction of a new 10-classroom junior/senior high school building on September 7, 1935. [ 19 ]
