All players in the league must have NCAA eligibility remaining in order to participate. So as to maintain their college eligibility, players are not paid.
The league expanded to eight teams for their second season in 2012, with the addition of the DeKalb County Liners, DuPage County Hounds, Illinois Lincolns and Northwest Indiana Oilmen. Two of the teams (Illinois and Will County) failed to complete the season schedule.
The following is a list of schools that participate in NCAA Division I baseball. In the 2023 season, 300 Division I schools competed. These teams compete to go to the 64-team Division I baseball tournament and then to Omaha, Nebraska, and Charles Schwab Field, for the eight-team Men's College World Series (MCWS).

The Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp are a collegiate summer league baseball team in the Prospect League. [1] They play at Veterans Memorial Park in Peru, Illinois, United States. The Pistol Shrimp formed in Lisle, Illinois, in late 2018 as an expansion franchise for the 2019 season, under the name DuPage Pistol Shrimp.
The league notes that: "College players, home for the summer, can enjoy their families and friends, together with participating in a good competitive league. Official Major League (American League) rules are used with the exception of mandatory use of double ear flap helmets and college safety slide rule. The league has used wood bats since 1992."
