Alton ( / ˈɔːltən / AWL-tən) is a city on the Mississippi River in Madison County, Illinois, United States, about 18 miles (29 km) north of St. Louis, Missouri. The population was 25,676 at the 2020 census. It is a part of the River Bend area in the Metro-East region of the Greater St. Louis metropolitan area.
Spencer Truman Olin (August 20, 1900 – April 14, 1995) was an American businessman and philanthropist. He was an executive of the Olin Corporation, founded in 1892 by his father, Franklin W. Olin, eventually serving as first vice president of Olin Industries, though he reduced his involvement with the company after its 1954 merger with Mathieson.
Elijah P. Lovejoy (1802-1837) was an abolitionist in the 1830s, running a newspaper called the St Louis Observer, in Missouri, a slave state. Slavery advocates attacked and destroyed his presses three times. He decided to move across the river to Alton, Illinois, in 1837, where he renamed his newspaper as the Alton Observer.

Lloyd Hopkins Field is a baseball stadium in Alton, Illinois. Owned and operated by the city of Alton, [3] it is the home field for the Alton River Dragons, a collegiate summer baseball team in the Prospect League, [5] and for American Legion Baseball. [2] Hopkins Field hosted American Legion teams from 1981 to 2015, and they returned in 2020.
The SIU School of Dental Medicine occupies the 26 acres (11 ha) former Shurtleff College campus in the Upper Alton neighborhood of Alton for its primary teaching facilities and clinics. The Main Clinic (built 1984, renovated 2005) is the site of most student practical experience and provides patient dental care at 72 patient-care stations.
