Coryell County ( / ˈkɔːrjɛl / KOR-yel) [1] is a county located on the Edwards Plateau in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 83,093. [2] [3] The county seat is Gatesville. [4] The county is named for James Coryell, a frontiersman and Texas Ranger who was killed by Caddo Indians.
Southern States Cooperative was founded in 1923 as the Virginia Seed Service by 150 farmers in Richmond, Virginia to help develop seeds. It expanded to distribution of feed in 1925, fertilizer in 1926 and farm supplies and petroleum shortly after. At the time, farmers in Virginia were unable to buy seed guaranteed to grow in the Commonwealth.
When the Union Army entered Savannah, Georgia during the American Civil War, they occupied what is now called the John Montmollin Building; it had a large sign that read "A.
