CCISD is the 29th largest school district in Texas, spanning 103 square miles and serving over 41,000 students. The district operates 45 distinct campuses, consisting of 5 comprehensive high schools, 3 alternative high schools, 10 intermediate schools, and 27 elementary schools. In May 2023, the district's Bond Oversight Committee announced plans to rebuild 30 aging schools by 2034. During the 2010-2011 school, all schools converted to a 9-month school year due to budget shortfalls. Two campuses were converted back to year-round schedules beginning in the 2013–2014 school year.
By the 2006-2007 school year, the district was the third largest in Texas with more than 70 campuses and 100,603 students. In the 2010-2011 school year the district had over 106,000 students. Of them, 42.5% were Hispanic, 31% were White, 15.5% were Black, 8% were Asian, and others included Native Americans and people of two or more races.

The school was partially destroyed by fire in 1955, and in the same year, C.E. King Junior-Senior High School had its first graduating class of 11 students. In 1965, the Junior-Senior High School was renamed C.E. King Junior High School and a new C.E. King High School building on 8540 C.E. King Parkway opened on the land adjacent to it.
