Cascading Style Sheets ( CSS) is a style sheet language used for specifying the presentation and styling of a document written in a markup language such as HTML or XML (including XML dialects such as SVG, MathML or XHTML ). [1] CSS is a cornerstone technology of the World Wide Web, alongside HTML and JavaScript.
A web style sheet is a form of separation of content and presentation for web design in which the markup (i.e., HTML or XHTML) of a webpage contains the page's semantic content and structure, but does not define its visual layout (style). Instead, the style is defined in an external style sheet file using a style sheet language such as CSS or XSLT.
One modern style sheet language with widespread use is Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), which is used to style documents written in HTML, XHTML, SVG, XUL, and other markup languages. For content in structured documents to be presented, a set of stylistic rules – describing, for example, colors, fonts and layout – must be applied.
Specifics. The Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) specification describes how elements of web pages are displayed by graphical browsers. Section 4 of the CSS1 specification defines a "formatting model" that gives block-level elements—such as p and blockquote—a width and height, and three levels of boxes surrounding it: padding, borders, and margins.
The code CSS is non-XML syntax to define the style information for the various elements of the document that it styles. The language to structure a document ( markup language ) is a prelimit to CSS. A markup language, like HTML and less XUL, may define some primitive elements to style a document, for example <emphasis> to bold.
