Sultan Qaboos University is a public university located in al-Seeb, Oman. Established in 1986, it is one of the two public universities in the country and is named after Qaboos bin Said al-Said, the Sultan of Oman from 1970 until 2020. Most students entering the university are selected based on their performance in high school final examinations.

The Omani higher education system is relatively young, as the first public university in Oman, Sultan Qaboos University was founded in 1986. Prior to the establishment of SQU, the government sent some students to pursue higher education studies in neighbouring Arab countries like UAE, Kuwait, Jordan and Egypt.
Al Mahrouqi was Director of the Language Center at Sultan Qaboos University from 2006 until 2010. [4] In 2010, Al Mahrouqi became assistant professor and in 2013 associate professor at the university. Additionally, she was Director at SQU's Humanities Research Center from 2014 until 2016.
