The history of the United States Marine Corps ( USMC) begins with the founding of the Continental Marines on 10 November 1775 to conduct ship-to-ship fighting, provide shipboard security and discipline enforcement, and assist in landing forces. Its mission evolved with changing military doctrine and foreign policy of the United States.

The largest of six main Fleet Readiness Centers in the US Navy, it provides support to Navy and Marine Corps tactical, logistical and rotary wing aircraft and their components. It maintains field sites at Point Mugu, Camp Pendleton, and MCAS Miramar. MCAS Yuma, MCAS Kaneohe Bay, NAS Whidbey Island, and in Okinawa and Iwakuni, Japan.
The Marine Corps Institute, commonly referred to as MCI, developed and maintained a curriculum of Marine Corps education. Subjects included infantry strategy/tactics, leadership skills, MOS qualifications, personal finance, and mathematics. Completion of MCI courses was generally required for promotion to the next Marine enlisted rank.
