On 1 July 1898, the 6th Regiment took the brunt of the fighting during the charge up San Juan Hill. The regiment returned to the United States, serving at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, from the end of 1898 until late July 1899, when it sailed to the Philippines to help quell the insurgents in the Philippine–American War.
