Founded on 9 May 1930, the medical school grew out of the Department of Medicine of Baku State University. During World War II, the institute trained 2,082 doctors. By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Azerbaijan SSR, the medical institute was named after a doctor and writer Nariman Narimanov on 29 April 1957.
The Azerbaijan Medical University is the only provider of undergraduate medical education in the country. Several unlicensed private medical schools operated in the late 1990s and early 2000s, but they all were closed by the Ministry of Education by 2005. In 2013 about 1020 medical students are enrolled annually in 8 departments.
