It opened in 1986 and is named for a former school superintendent, Dr. Ralph H. Poteet. [2] It is the fourth high school built by the Mesquite Independent School District. Poteet serves grades 9 through 12.
In the March 1901, the Mesquite Independent School District was incorporated at the behest of the citizens of Mesquite Texas to serve the primary and secondary educational needs of the city. The first school was established at the current site of MHS in 1902 with an enrollment of approximately 200 students.
