In October 2009, the Council on Education for Public Health accepted CUNY’s application to be reviewed for transforming its accredited programs in public health into a single school of public health. The review process began in 2010 and was completed in 2011. In September 2013, Dr. Ayman El-Mohandes was named Dean.
The School's programs have also been ranked among the top in the nation. As of 2024, the U.S. News & World Report named CUNY SPS #11 on their nationwide list of Best Online Bachelor’s Programs. Ranked out of 339 schools assessed, CUNY SPS is the highest listed in New York City.
CUNY School of Law was established as a public interest law school with a curriculum focused on integrating clinical teaching methods within traditional legal studies.
