On 8 July 1991, SOCPAC assumed control of Naval Special Warfare Task Unit-Pacific and a platoon of United States Navy SEALs, based at Apra Harbor in Guam. In early March 2001, SOCPAC established the Joint Special Operations Aviation Component.
Initially stationed at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, it previously fell administratively under Marine Aircraft Group 31 (MAG-31), but operationally under the U.S. Air Force's 33d Fighter Wing, which controls all F-35A training for the Air Force and previously controlled all F-35B and F-35C training for the Department of the Navy. With that mission in mind, the Royal Norwegian Navy consisted of a large number of small vessels and up to 15 small diesel-electric submarines. The navy is now replacing those vessels with a smaller number of larger and more capable vessels.
