Several small lakes and rivers flow into Jan Lake while its outflow is at its west end through a glacier-carved channel into Pelican Lake. The lake is within the Sturgeon-Weir River drainage basin.

It was named "Foam Lake" in 1882 by the Milligans (who were the first settlers in the area) because of the large amount of froth that forms on it.
