November 24, 1968. The De Vargas Street House, often referred to as the Oldest House, is a historic building in Santa Fe, New Mexico, which is often said to be one of the oldest buildings in United States. The original date of construction is unknown but the majority of the building is believed to date to the Spanish colonial period (post-1610).
1824 — The 1824 Constitution of Mexico establishes Santa Fe as the capitol of the Mexican territory Santa Fe de Nuevo México. 1836 — Texas claims all land in the territory east of the Rio Grande, including Santa Fe; the claim is never reified.
As these new territories became controlled, they were brought under the purview of the Viceroy of New Spain. Spanish settlers expanded to Nuevo Mexico, and the major settlement of Santa Fe was founded in 1610.

New Mexico Territory. The Territory of New Mexico was an organized incorporated territory of the United States from September 9, 1850, [1] until January 6, 1912. [2] It was created from the U.S. provisional government of New Mexico, as a result of Nuevo México becoming part of the American frontier after the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
Land grants in New Mexico and Colorado were awarded to individuals and communities by the Spanish and Mexican governments to encourage settlement and expansion of the Territorio de Nuevo Mexico, which included southern Colorado.
