The school started in 1974 as a shared campus with the established Villa Park High School for students in grades 10–12. Upon completion of the Anaheim Hills campus, a variety of names were considered for the site. A ballot of three proposed names was given to the students of Vista Del Rio Jr. High School to vote on.
The school opened in 2007 to serve the southern side of Folsom and to relieve overcrowding at Folsom High School. The official school colors are navy blue and silver. It is one of the only schools in the Folsom Cordova Unified School District to use block scheduling. The mascot is the eagle. Vista del Lago's first class graduated in May 2010.

History. While still sophomores, Manzano's first senior class attended classes at Sandia High School (1959–1960), sharing the facility. The next school year (1960–1961), the Manzano students, now juniors, along with the new sophomore class, started the year at Sandia, and, when the new school was ready, moved into Manzano High on December 19, 1960.
