History. NorthShore was founded as Evanston Hospital in 1891 during an outbreak of typhoid fever. In the early 1900s Evanston Hospital expanded and became a teaching hospital. Louis W. Sauer developed a vaccine for whooping cough (pertussis) at Evanston Hospital in the 1920s.
