Initially code-named "Cougar", [17] HTML 4.0 adopted many browser-specific element types and attributes, but also sought to phase out Netscape's visual markup features by marking them as deprecated in favor of style sheets. HTML 4 is an SGML application conforming to ISO 8879 – SGML.
The method used for selecting the colours for various top-level pages, e.g. Main Page, Community Portal, Contents, and Help:Contents. The 3 colours are generated using the HSV colour space, then translated into RGB. Note: for layouts with no spacing between borders, use the darker border colour.

The present W3C list is a superset of the 16 "VGA colors" defined in HTML 3.2 and CSS level 1. One notable difference between X11 and W3C is the case of "Gray" and its variants. In HTML, "Gray" is specifically reserved for the 128 triplet (50% gray) .
