DIU is the first university in Bangladesh to have signed the UN's Commitment to Sustainable Practices of Higher Education Institutions. According to the SCOPUS indexed research publications in 2022, Daffodil International University has been positioned 2nd among all universities and 1st among all private universities in Bangladesh.
The initial planning began in 1994 but the university was established in 1995. In fact, DIU takes the initiative strongly for the creation of non-government universities and supports the initiative of the Government of Bangladesh. It is now operated as a government-approved university under the Non-Government University Acts of 1992 and 1998.
The awarded degree from the private university is equivalent to a degree obtained from any public university of Bangladesh. But the authorities of this university are now divided in four separate groups and running their activities form different campuses. As of August 2017, the university was functioning under stay order from the court.
Currently it is the largest public research university in Bangladesh, with a student body of 46,150 and a faculty of 1,992. It has made significant contributions to the modern history of Bangladesh. After the Partition of India, it became the focal point of progressive and democratic movements in Pakistan.
