A dental hygienist or oral hygienist is a licensed dental professional, registered with a dental association or regulatory body within their country of practice. Prior to completing clinical and written board examinations, registered dental hygienists must have either an associate's or bachelor's degree in dental hygiene from an accredited college or university.
The UCLA School of Dentistry was established in 1964 [5] in response to the need for an additional public school of dentistry in the greater Los Angeles area. The Class of 1968 was the first graduating class, with 28 Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degrees awarded. Over time, the school has grown and transformed.
Previously a three-year degree, the dental program was extended to four years by 1938. Additional programs were added, including two-year and bachelor's degrees in dental hygiene in 1920 and 1990, respectively, and a graduate degree program in 1937. The School of Dentistry today
