Winthrop University was founded In 1886, when the Peabody Education Board of Massachusetts, headed by Robert Charles Winthrop, provided $1,500 to form the Winthrop Training School for white women teachers. That year the school opened its doors to twenty-one students in Columbia, South Carolina.

By 2019, a full asset merger between NYU and Winthrop had been complete. In November 2020, it was announced that the hospital changed its name to NYU Langone Hospital - Long Island.
