UAH soccer began in 1969 when students approached Dr. Ostap Stromecky for his assistance in forming a club team. Stromecky would coach the Chargers for 21 years, compiling a 265–90–29 record at the club and varsity levels. UAH became an intercollegiate sport in the fall of 1973, joining the NAIA.
UAH, with which a fair number of the transplants had an institutional affiliation, was a convenient forum for their enthusiasm. The UAH ice hockey program began as a club team in the late 1970s. UAH has played their home games at Von Braun Center in Huntsville, Alabama since the inception of the program in 1979. The Chargers claim three National Club Championships and two NCAA Division II National Championships in addition to making a pair of appearances in the NCAA Division I men's ice hockey tournament.

The UAH Student Government Association is the primary recipient of student-activity funding from UAH's Office of Student Life; the Space Hardware Club, a registered student organization in the College of Engineering is the secondary recipient. The SGA holds an advisory role with campus administrators on activities involving students.
The team completed the regular season with 22 wins, 3 losses, and 3 ties. UAH was then invited to play the Bemidji State Beavers in a two-game series to determine the Division II National Championship at Huntsville's Von Braun Center. The Chargers would take the championship after a 6–2 victory on March 13 and a 5–2 victory the following day.
