Founded on 9 May 1930, the medical school grew out of the Department of Medicine of Baku State University. During World War II, the institute trained 2,082 doctors. By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Azerbaijan SSR, the medical institute was named after a doctor and writer Nariman Narimanov on 29 April 1957.
At the end of April 1942, the staff was expanded by a group of teachers and students of the Leningrad Pharmaceutical and 2nd Leningrad Medical Institutes. In March 1943, the Pyatigorsk Pharmaceutical Institute was organized on the basis of evacuated Dnepropetrovsk and Leningrad universities.
