It is dedicated to the life and deeds of 19th century U.S. entrepreneur, philanthropist, and namesake of the city, George Peabody. The museum shares its location with the Peabody Leather Museum.
The current Peabody High School, officially Peabody Veterans Memorial High School, was built on Lowell Street in 1972. In 2023, the City of Peabody announced it would build a new high school or move forward with a major renovation of the current building on Lowell Street.
