Swain County High School is a result of consolidations in the 1950s and a 1970s building program. It was originally four high schools: Bryson City (1924), Whittier (1936), Alarka (1938), and Almond (1925), but in 1950 additions were made to Bryson City High School and officials named it Swain County High School.

Bell-Jeff was a four-year college preparatory high school. As of the 2014-2015 school year the school offered eight Advanced Placement courses (Calculus, Chemistry, Chinese Language & Culture, English Literature, European History, Psychology, Spanish Language, and United States History), UC approved college prep courses, and a host of electives.
When SAISD moved 9th grade to the high school, John Greenleaf Whittier became a middle school housing grades 6, 7 and 8. In the fall of 2003 students at the junior high moved into temporary facilities next to the school building while new additional construction was completed. The new school opened in August 2007 as Whittier Health Science Academy.
