Jefferson County Public Schools ( JCPS) is a public school district located in Jefferson County, Kentucky, and operating all but one of the public schools in the county. It is governed by an elected seven-member Board of Education, which selects and hires a superintendent, who serves as the system's chief executive.
Beginnings. The first school in Jefferson County and the second school in Colorado opened in Golden on January 9, 1860. It stood at around today's 1304 Washington Avenue and was a rented log cabin, with school taught by Thomas Daughterty, with 18 students, financed through tuition and subscription. Its second term was taught by Miss M. F. Manly.

The Southwest Campus is located in southwestern Jefferson County, just off the Gene Snyder Expressway. The Southwest Campus is home to the college's Technology and Related Sciences program. Jefferson's newest campus is in Bullitt County and prepares students to transfer to university or to the college's technical programs.
