v. t. e. Founded in 1920, The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics ( NCTM) is a professional organization for schoolteachers of mathematics in the United States. One of its goals is to improve the standards of mathematics in education. NCTM holds annual national and regional conferences for teachers and publishes five journals.
Origins. The Principles and Standards for School Mathematics was developed by the NCTM. The NCTM's stated intent was to improve mathematics education. The contents were based on surveys of existing curriculum materials, curricula and policies from many countries, educational research publications, and government agencies such as the U.S. National Science Foundation.
In the United States, mathematics curriculum in elementary and middle school is integrated, while in high school it traditionally has been separated by topic, with each topic usually lasting for the whole school year. However, some districts have integrated curricula, or decided to try integrated curricula after Common Core was adopted.
