Established in 1967, the college is one of the oldest in the North Carolina Community College System. It offers associate degree programs and continuing education.
The student activities wing is named for Sarah Easley Harper, originator of the Student Support Center. The early childhood education wing is named the Jarrett/Oglesby Center. The college opened its four-story Fire and Rescue Training Center in 2003. Tri-County Early College High School opened on the main campus in 2006.
