UTRGV inherited the academic accreditation of its legacy institutions. The university is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. UTRGV was notified on December 6, 2016 that it was being placed on a 12-month probation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).
