The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) is an American non-profit medical research organization based in Chevy Chase, Maryland. [3] [4] It was founded in 1953 by Howard Hughes, an American business magnate, investor, record-setting pilot, engineer, [5] film director, and philanthropist, known during his lifetime as one of the most financially successful individuals in the world.
On 31 October 1959 plans were announced to create the Civil Aeromedical Research Institute (CARI) which was established in 1961. [3] A new CARI building was opened at the Aeronautical Center in Oklahoma City. In 1965 the Institute's organizational scope and structure were enlarged and CARI was renamed the Civil Aeromedical Institute (CAMI).
The Institute started functioning as College of Medical Sciences in 1960 with nine departments of Modern Medicine and eight departments of Ayurveda, under the leadership of K. N. Udupa, the Founder Director of the institute. [6] [7] In 1971, the College of Medical Sciences, was upgraded to Institute of Medical Sciences.
