Baku State University (BSU) (Azerbaijani: Bakı Dövlət Universiteti (BDU)) is a public university located in Baku, Azerbaijan.Established on 1 September 1919 by the Parliament of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, the university started with faculties of history and philology, physics and mathematics, and law and medicine, with an initial enrollment of 1094.
The university was founded in 1992 and served 306 students with 149 faculty. The university was established by the state government to augment the specialized academic offerings of the University of Agriculture, Makurdi. In 1991, the state government formed a 13-member steering committee to plan for and obtain approval for the university.
