In the March 1901, the Mesquite Independent School District was incorporated at the behest of the citizens of Mesquite Texas to serve the primary and secondary educational needs of the city. The first school was established at the current site of MHS in 1902 with an enrollment of approximately 200 students.
Students, at this time, attended high school in the Mesquite Independent School District. North Mesquite High School was the designated high school. On May 12, 2007, Sunnyvale ISD residents approved a $25 million bond by a narrow 53% margin for the creation of a high school in Sunnyvale.
