The 23rd Special Operations Weather Squadron (23rd SOWS) is a weather squadron of the United States Air Force Special Operations Command, based at Hurlburt Field with the 1st Special Operations Group (1st SOG) of the 1st Special Operations Wing.
After over three decades with Hurlburt Field as its home station, the squadron relocated to Cannon Air Force Base in 2009. On 27 May 2015, AFSOC retired the final AC-130H Spectre Gunship in service, tail number #69-6569 "Excalibur". [6] The squadron converted to AC-130W Stinger IIs (previously designated MC-130W) during 2015. [7]

Tyndall Field first opened its doors on December 7, 1941 as a gunnery range. [4] The airfield was named in honor of 1st Lt Frank Benjamin Tyndall (1894–1930). [ 5 ] With the establishment of the United States Air Force in 1947, the facility was renamed "Tyndall Air Force Base" on 13 January 1948.
