The City University of New York (CUNY, spoken / ˈ k juː n i /, KYOO-nee) is the public university system of New York City.It is the largest urban university system in the United States, comprising 25 campuses: eleven senior colleges, seven community colleges, and seven professional institutions.
In 1967, the school was renamed John Jay College of Criminal Justice to reflect broader education objectives. The school's namesake, John Jay (1745–1829), was the first chief justice of the United States Supreme Court and a Founding Father of the United States. Jay was a native of New York City and served as governor of New York State.
Later on, Lehman College, College of Staten Island, and John Jay College were added. Commonly known as Macaulay Honors College University Scholars Program, its first class graduated in 2005. [citation needed] Laura Schor, Professor of History at Hunter College and the CUNY Graduate Center, was Macaulay Honors College's founding dean.
