The 8th district takes in the Cook County municipalities of Schaumburg, Rosemont, Rolling Meadows, South Barrington, and Streamwood; most of Hoffman Estates; half of Des Plaines and Streamwood; the majority of Elk Grove Village west of Tome Rd; part of Palatine; and part of Mt Prospect between Dempster St and W Lonnquist Blvd.
The district currently, as redistricted in 2012 following the 2010 United States Census, continued to be entirely located entirely within the city boundaries of Chicago, and largely resembled the shape that the district already had before the redistricting. The district was 14.26 square miles (9,130 acres).

The Chicago Board of Education election will take place on November 5, 2024, alongside the statewide general elections. This will be the first ever election to the Board, which has been an appointed body since is formation in 1837.

The district is a belt of 69,000 acres (280 km 2) of forest reservations surrounding the city of Chicago. The Brookfield Zoo (managed by the Chicago Zoological Society) and the Chicago Botanic Garden (managed by the Chicago Horticultural Society) are located in the forest preserves.
