e. Exchange ActiveSync (commonly known as EAS) is a proprietary protocol designed for the synchronization of email, contacts, calendar, tasks, and notes from a messaging server to a smartphone or other mobile devices. The protocol also provides mobile device management and policy controls. The protocol is based on XML.
Settings may be in a different location in each email client, though the AOL server and port settings will always be the same. For additional questions specific to the email client, check the manufacturer’s website. Manufacturers cannot answer questions about your AOL Mail settings, or your AOL username or password.
Overview. ActiveSync allows a mobile device to be synchronized with either a desktop PC or a server running a compatible software product. On desktops, ActiveSync synchronizes emails, calendar, contacts and tasks with Microsoft Outlook, along with Internet bookmarks and files. ActiveSync does not support all features of Outlook.
Background. Microsoft Exchange is considered a high-value target for hackers looking to penetrate business networks, as it is email server software, and, according to Microsoft, it provides "a unique environment that could allow attackers to perform various tasks using the same built-in tools or scripts that admins use for maintenance."
